Abstract
This study examines material culture and social formations in early India through a multi-scalar and interdisciplinary framework, focusing on continuity and transformation from the Harappan to post-Harappan and early historic phases. Moving beyond Indus-centric narratives, it integrates archaeological evidence with insights from GIS-based spatial analysis, isotopic studies, and bioarchaeology to reassess settlement patterns, mobility, and resource utilization. The research highlights that early Indian material culture was characterized by both persistence and regional diversification, where post-Harappan developments reflected adaptation rather than abrupt civilizational collapse. It further demonstrates that household-level production, craft specialization, and everyday material practices played a crucial role in shaping social organization, complementing established macro-level interpretations of urbanism and state formation. The study also identifies early India as a polycentric cultural landscape, where multiple regional trajectories interacted dynamically across ecological zones. In theoretical terms, it argues for an integrated approach combining culture-historical, Marxist, and contemporary anthropological perspectives on materiality and agency. The findings underscore the need to view material culture not merely as a passive reflection of society but as an active force in the production of social relations. Overall, the study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of early Indian societies as complex, adaptive, and regionally differentiated formations shaped by both continuity and change.
